What is the Commutative and Associative Property? Ask Us- We’ll Tell You!

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Two properties of math that we are learning about are associative and commutative. These properties are like rules that describe how math works. This powerpoint describes what these properties are and give some great visuals to explain how they work.

Our class recorded a podcast today on the commutative and associative properties. I recorded our learning for all to hear!!! Enjoy!

Genres Boost Reading Motivation

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

This quarter the second grade is working on reading from a variety of genres. Why, you may ask? The answer is simple- reading from a variety of genres increases students motivation to read. We all have our own reading identities- and because of that we enjoy different types of books. Sometimes second graders haven’t found the genre that captures their attention, and they just need a little guidance as to all the types of books that are avaible!

The goal consists of your child reading a book from a specific genre, and then writing a pie piece of information about the book. These pieces will come back to school and will be glued to your child’s “genre pie”. When all pieces are brought back, your child can attend the third quarter reading party. I will insert a link to the genre letter- they can go in any order- just read, write, and most importantly, have fun!

Happy Reading Second Grade!

All About ME!!

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Our powerpoint this week comes from Vicki Blackwell. This is a powerpoint presentation for you to create at home- and then we’ll show it in class and post in on your wiki. It’s an all about me slide show- where you can fill in your own information! At the very end of the slide show, you can write a quiz to see how well we really know you!!!

I can’t wait to see your amazing work!! :)

Wonderful World of Classroom Wikis

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

You may have noticed an addition to our class webpage- our students have learned about and edited their very own personal wiki pages! A wiki is software that allows us to create, view, and edit information easily on the internet and these pages are often associated with collaborative learning. On our class wikipage we are able to view information that student’s typed about themselves.

One of the fabulous things about wikis is the ability to have students collaborate and edit information on other pages. On Wednesday we went into our wikipage and students edited other student’s pages by adding more information (what friends say about me). I have never seen kids so excited in the computer lab! They loved writing about their friends and viewing what others had written about them.

Parents- please feel free to add pictures, comments, audio/video clips to your child’s wiki. (in order to edit pages students have a unique user name and password- please email me if your child forgot and I will let you know) Keep posted for more wikis from room 203 and let’s keep SURFIN’ WITH TECHNOLOGY!!!

Missing Addends Add Up to a Challenge

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Our powerpoint for this week is another gameshow spin-off reviewing Missing Addends. This topic can be tricky and we have learned a few strategies to help us in class.

1. Count up- Look at the other addend and COUNT UP while drawing tally marks or using counters until you reach the sum.

2. Count back- Start at the sum and then subtract the other addend in the addition sentence.

3. Memorize the fact family! If you know that 2,3, and 5 are all in the same fact family, then finding the missing addend for 2 + x = 5 will be a breeze! This is the best strategy and ultimately what second graders should be doing by the end of the year. It shows automaticity with math facts which will be a great benefit to them next year in third grade.

I hope these strategies help- good luck!

Do I Infer? The answer’s YES!

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

When we infer text in second grade, we make smart guesses based on clues in the story. Inferring is an important reading strategy that allows us to be better thinkers as well as readers.

Our class recently learned a song that will help us to remember what inferring is all about! (click here to learn more about inferring from our class website)

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? You can- if you remember our phonics goals!!

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Recently our class reviewed our phonics goals for the year with a class power point based on the television game show- “Who wants to be a millionaire?” It was hard for some of us to remember what we learned back in September, so we needed the review. I am going to put a link to the power point show so you can play the game at home. You do need Microsoft power point or another presentation viewer software in order to view.

Good luck- and I hope that you get the million dollars!!
