Community People

h1 Thursday, September 27th, 2007

This past week we have been learning about all the different community people. As a class, we brainstormed and came up with a fabulous list of several different community helpers. We each chose one to write about, and then we each recorded our sentences in our very first podcast! I am so proud of my second graders for doing such a fantastic job!

Star Spangled Banner

h1 Thursday, September 27th, 2007

We have been starting our day off with a patriotic song. This month we learned the Star Spangled Banner. Not only is this instilling a love of our flag and our country, but it is teaching them our national anthem. I am so impressed with how quickly they have picked up on this song and how beautifully they sing. It makes my heart feel so good inside! A few of our students have even passed this off with me to be in our All Star Mastery Club!

We are Fit Kids

h1 Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

This week our second graders are learning about the importance of healthy choices like washing our hands with warm soap and water and exercising to keep our bodies fit and in shape. If we are healthy in our bodies, our minds can concentrate on learning!

What is your favorite activity that helps you become a fit kid?

Text to Self Connections

h1 Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

We have been talking about how we CONNECT to books that we read by using our schemas or background knowledge. Through making connections, our understanding becomes deeper of what we have read. We can begin to feel what the characters are feeling and really get a sense of author’s purpose and any lessons that we can learn from a story.

One type of connection is called a text to self connection. Good readers will think “Wow- when I read the part about: _______ ,it reminded me of: __________.” Or in other words- that book connects to ME.

I would absolutely love to hear a text to self connection you have had with a book. Remember to use the correct text to self connection language- when I read about:______ it reminded me of:___________.

You are a brilliant class! Room 203 is shining!!

Cherry Counting Contest

h1 Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Our class just completed a cherry counting contest where we counted up to 1,000! On Tuesday afternoon when we had just finished saying the number 990, we were so excited that someone mentioned that we do some yoga to calm us down ( I thought that was a fabulous idea).

This was a great opportunity for us to learn more about numbers, expanded notation, and not to say the word and between the hundreds and tens place. Our cherry trees were designed on PowerPoint- another technology integration for our classroom.cherry.gif
